As in all of France, there are many fine restaurants in the Limousin region. The area is special, however, for the world renowned Limousin cattle, and, as you would expect, many restaraurants and ferme d'auberge specialise in beef dishes. Below is a small selection of those we have either visited or have been recommended to us - they are all within thirty minutes drive of Les Hirondelles.
Moulin de Gabios St. Goussaud All meals prepared from fresh produce raised on the premises - including trout from their lake adjacent to the restaurant. Popular and need to book well in advance.
Menu from approx 12 Euros. Open lunchtimes only and closed Mondays.
Au refuge des Amis Les Billanges Popular with local residents. Open during the day only - renowned for entrecote steak and frites at around 9 Euros.
Hotel Porte de St. Jean La Souterraine Lovely restaurant, friendly service and very good cuisine. Menu from around 12 Euros. Open lunchtimes and evenings (except national holidays).
Hôtel des Voyageurs Ambazac Outdoor terrace, friendly service and very good cuisine. Menu from around 12 Euros. Open lunchtimes and evenings (except national holidays).
Un Air de Famille Chatelus le Marcheix This one is new to us this year and we haven't visited it yet. Small restaurant in the lovely town of Chatelus. Good choice of Perigordian salads and beef. Menu from around 4 Euros.
Auberge de L'Atre Bourganeuf Good selection of fish, Limousin beef and salad dishes, nice ambiance. Menu from around 9 Euros. Closed Sunday evenings.
