Markets are
an essential part of Limousin life, there is little better in
life than tasting and choosing freshly grown local produce,
much of it organically grown, at one of the local markets. There
is one in just about every village each week, sometimes quite
small, although they are much larger during the summer months.
The
Limousin has many specialist markets during the year. In July
the world's largest cheese market is held at Aubusson, June
and September heralds the flower market at St. Goussaud - very
small but also a very colourful and friendly occasion where
everyone from the commune gathers.
If
you are a collector or interested in antiques then the brocantes
are for you. The brocantes (antique dealers) specialise in everything
from antique furniture to champagne labels, old farm implements
to postcards, and there are shops in most towns. Brocante fairs
are held in various villages and towns throughout the year,
although the most well known is the monthly flea market which
is enormous and held near the cathedral in Limoges.
"Vide Greniers" (car boot sales) are always popular
and generally the place to pick up a real bargain - you just
never know what you are going to come across - again these are
held throughout the spring, summer and autumn months. You will
find the odd dealer there, but in general these are markets
where anyone can sell off unwanted items. Bartering is essential
- you never pay the asking price!
Trocs are also a source for the
odd bargain. Basically second hand stores, many also carry antique
furniture and bric a brac. Some sell everything from the kitchen
sink to old stoves - if you can't find it anywhere else then
these are the places to visit!
